Homework Wednesday, 9/26

BOTH CLASSES: You have a test tomorrow.  In this post is listed the pages and problem numbers.  The answers are given in posts below.  Don't forget, you MUST come tomorrow morning with your answers checked and corrected.  Please email me if you have any questions, or you think that I made a mistake.

Pre-Algebra: Pg. 56 #1 - 39 odd

Algebra: Pg. 162 - 163 #9 - 14, 16, 18.  The worksheet we did in class is not required, but I did also give the answers to those questions below.

Algebra Book HW Answers 9/26

9. All Real numbers
10. x = -12
11. x = 58 / 7, or x = 8.285714... with all digits repeating
12. x = -9
13. x = 73 / 19, or x = 3.842105263157894736... with all 18 of those digits repeating.  If you're going to use a decimal, you have to carry it out all the way until it ends or repeats.
14. x = 25 / 81, or x = 0.308641975... repeating (I think).  Decimals recommended for entertainment purposes only.
16. x = 19 - 4y
18a. x = hours for assistant; x - 2 = hours for master
18b. 50x = bricks for assistant; 80(x - 2) = bricks for master
18c. Assistant has worked 5 1/3 hours ("five and one third"), master has worked 3 1/3 hours.
18d. No. It will take 8.92 hours to lay 1000 bricks, or you could say that after 8 hours they will have laid 880 bricks.

Algebra Worksheet Answers 9/26

(Not required, but here they are if you want them)
1. x = 10
2. d = -4/3 or -1.333333...
3. w = -9
4. e can be any Real number
5. c = 23/6 or 3.83333333...
6. y = 0
7. No solution for f
8. b = -0.7 or -7/10
9. a = 1.3 or 13/10
10. z = -3

11. g = (h + 13)/2 or g = h/2 + 6.5
12. u = 9p^2 / 170 ("9 p squared over 170"), or 0.9p^2 / 17
13. i = 7W / (12j) (I substituted the "W" for the psi)
14. B = (v - 2r - 4) / 3 (obviously I switched "B" for beta)

15a. 70 ft/s; then 121.2 ft/s
15b. 6 + 32t (which is NOT 38t)
15c. 3 seconds; then 7.75 seconds

16a. Ludwig: 475 - 14n; Wolfgang: 56 + 2n
16b. 26.1875 days, or 26 days, 4 hours, and 30 minutes

17a. Cold: 9.5m; Hot: 8.4(m - 3)
17b. Never.  If you solve the equation, you should get m = -22.90909090... and if you think about it, you're turning on the faster faucet first, so the slow one will never catch up.
17c. approximately 5.60 minutes after the Cold goes on.

11. 3
13. 23
15. 19
17. 2
19. 121 & -121
